Why Foster?

Foster homes are the heart of Great Pyrenees Rescue of Missouri’s ability to save lives. Fostering is a commitment, but the rewards of making a difference to the life of a pyr in need is priceless. When you foster, you are helping to save a life and providing a second chance to very deserving animals.

  • Dogs receive one-on-one attention in a foster home, allowing us to get to know each dog for the best adoption placement.

  • A dog has time to adjust to positive changes and overcome previous conditions they have endured while in foster care.

  • They can learn to trust again and regain their emotional and physical well being through the time and effort spent with a foster family.

Our foster parents provide temporary care and homes to our rescue dogs until we are able to match them with their pyrfect furever home. Some of our rescue pups need additional time with a foster home for medical treatment, to recuperate from injury or illness, or additional socialization before being ready for adoption. Be assured we do our best to match up foster homes with suitable foster dogs.

What to Expect

Foster families are the temporary "furever home" and provide the necessary care and support any pet would need. They care for a rescue dog just the same as if it was their own until they get adopted. By fostering you are able to learn about the pet’s personality, likes, and dislikes so that they can be better matched to the right furever home. We ask that our fosters provide shelter, transportation to and from veterinary appointments, and don't forget love, attention, and patience.

While you foster, we will provide you with the following essentials to properly care for your foster dog:

  •  All veterinary expenses (using one of our partner vets)

  •  Food

  •  Flea Treatment/Prevention & Heart Worm Protection

  •  Crate (if needed)

Depending on your foster pet’s needs, foster periods can last anywhere from two weeks to several months. We search for a pyrfect adopter for your foster dog, and we encourage you to be as involved in that process as you would like to be.

Foster Requirements

Foster homes must have a secure and visible fence.

Additionally, any current pets must be up-to-date on vaccinations and spayed/neutered.

After your application has been submitted and reviewed, you will be contacted by one of our team members to schedule a home check, either in person or via video chat. During this visit,  we will get to know you and your family for better foster dog placement.

Together we will create a profile of the dogs that would best fit in your home environment. For example, if you have a male dog that does not get along with other males, we will only have you foster female dogs.

When a foster dog is available that would fit your current profile, we will contact you and you can begin fostering.

We ask our foster families fill out an assessment for their foster dog so we can get to know their personality and find them the best matched forever family.

You may also be asked to speak to potential adopters to give them better insight to the dog you are fostering.

All of our dogs can be fostered in Missouri and surrounding states that we are currently able to transport to: Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska and Arkansas.

Additional Information

Before fostering, keep in mind that many of our rescue dogs have never lived inside a home. Some dogs may never have been walked on a leash, socialized, house-trained or spent time with other animals.

Our fosters work with these dogs on many of these issues to prepare them for their furever homes, so these dogs need patience and understanding as they learn to adapt to their new environment.

If you have any questions about fostering or the requirements, please contact us prior to filling out an application and we will be happy to provide clarification.
